“White Tie” After Six - the Formal Wedding
“White Tie” is reserved for ultra formal weddings or ceremonies held in the evening after six o’clock. The groom and groomsmen wear black tails with white pique shirts, vests, and bow ties. Shoes are black patent leather. The groom distinguishes himself with different shirt studs, or a special boutonnière. Guests invited to a “White Tie” event are expected to wear formal attire.
“Black-Tie” After Six - a Formal Wedding
The majority of formal weddings will be black tie. The groom and groomsmen wear black tuxedos (not necessarily tailcoats) with white or ivory shirts to match the color of the bride’s gown. They may wear matching black ties, cummerbunds or vests, as well as black pants, and patent leather shoes. The fathers of the bride and groom should dress like the groomsmen, as should the ring bearer. The groom may wear a white or ivory vest and bow tie instead of black, or he may wear a different boutonniere. In summer or tropical climates, white dinner jackets are appropriate.
Black Tie or Dinner Jackets” - a Semi-Formal Event
For semi-formal weddings after six, the groom and groomsmen should wear black or dark gray tuxedos. Their shirts may be either white or ivory to match the bride’s gown. They may wear vests or cummerbunds, bow ties, and pocket squares to match their jackets or the bridesmaids’ gowns. Shoes are patent leather. For a “Black Tie Optional” or non-wedding event, the white dinner jacket, black trousers, and black or colored accessories is appropriate as an alternative to the classic black tuxedo.
From Traditional to Personal
While strict guidelines are followed if you prefer a traditional wedding, many couples today opt for a more personalized approach. The latest trend in men’s formalwear accessories allows expression of your individual tastes with color and pattern choices on everything from bow ties, long ties, vests, and pocket squares. Not only will these colorful accessories coordinate beautifully with the bridal bouquet and attendants’ gowns, but they can also provide a matching link between the groom and his groomsmen. Accessories are also perfect for adding a defining element to a holiday or theme wedding.
